Resetting Windows After a Hard Drive Failure

If your hard drive has failed and you're installing a new one, follow these steps to set up Windows 10 or Windows 11 on the new drive.

Step 1: Prepare the New Hard Drive

  1. Install the new hard drive into your computer.
  2. Boot using Hiren's BootCD to format the new drive.
  3. Ensure the new hard drive is formatted to FAT32.

Step 2: Create a Bootable Windows USB or Disk

  1. Download the Windows 10 or Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's official website.
  2. Use a tool like Rufus or Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB drive.
  3. Insert the bootable USB drive into your computer.

Step 3: Change BIOS Settings for USB Boot

  1. Power on your computer and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu.
  2. Disable Legacy Mode in BIOS settings.
  3. Change the boot order to USB Boot.
  4. Save changes and restart your computer.

Step 4: Install Windows

  1. When the computer restarts, press F12 again to enter the Boot Menu.
  2. Select the USB drive as the boot device.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the Windows installation process.

Step 5: Adjust BIOS Settings for OS Boot

  1. Once Windows setup is complete, restart the computer and enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Enable Legacy Mode in BIOS.
  3. Change the boot order to:
    • OS Manager
    • Legacy → Hard Disk
  4. Save changes and restart your computer.

Step 6: Complete Windows Installation

  1. After the final restart, Windows will continue downloading and finalizing the setup.
  2. Follow the prompts to complete the installation and set up your user account.

Your system should now be running Windows successfully on the new hard drive!
